SHEARWATER is situated on Albert St, the main street leading
into the township of Whitianga itself. It has easy access
to the very popular surrounding tourist hot spots.
Whitianga Harbour situated in the beautiful Mercury
Bay is one of the safest harbours for boaties as there is
no bar to cross. There are dozens of islands dotted around
the bay which also encompasses the Te Whanganui - A - Hei
Marine reserve.
While you may just have a few days to see all
there is to see on the Coromandel, why not base yourself at
Shearwater Motel and from there you can partake in the many
and varied tourist attractions we have to offer here. We will
gladly make any bookings you require and have a large selection
of local brochures from which to chose your activities.
Whitianga is a 2 1/2
hr drive from Auckland.
Airport transfers can be arranged or rental cars
booked for you. Heading south from Auckland follow the signs
to Thames. Then follow the signs to Tairua. Along the way
you may wish to stop off at Pauanui, a popular weekend holiday
retreat for many Aucklanders. The long white sandy beach offers
good swimming and surf. The next stop is Tairua, also very
popular with a safe inlet and a surf beach. A climb to the
top of the hill will give you the most wonderful scenic lookout
with spectacular views overlooking Tairua and Pauanui.
Many small islands give the area added attraction
for boaties and fishermen. Continuing on and Whitianga is
just 48km away. Keep a look out for the 309 road as you may
like to take a drive there the following day.
On the way you will see the turnoff to Hot Water
Beach, Hahei, Cooks Beach, Cathedral Cove and Flaxmill Bay.
They are a must to see and do but there will be time enough
tomorrow!
